Cody Basketball Earns Sweep of Park County Rival Powell

Written by on January 11, 2020

BOTH CODY BASKETBALL TEAMS WERE IN ACTION FRIDAY NIGHT EARNING A SWEEP AGAINST THEIR PARK COUNTY RIVALS, POWELL.

IT WAS A DOUBLE HEADER OF BASKETBALL ACTION AS THE FILLIES GOT THE NIGHT STARTED OFF WITH SOME STELLAR DEFENSE. ONE THING THAT’S TRUE ABOUT ANY SPORT IS THAT DEFENSE TRAVELS IN ANY ENVIRONMENT AND THAT EVIDENT FOR THE CODY GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM. THE FILLIES FORCED 20 TURNOVERS IN THE FIRST HALF, BRITTAN BOWER HAD A DOUBLE-DOUBLE AND THE CODY FILLIES BASKETBALL TEAM DEFEATED POWELL 43-16 FRIDAY NIGHT TO EXTEND THEIR WIN STREAK TO FOUR GAMES.

IT WAS A SLOW START TO THE GAME OFFENSIVELY AS CODY LED 7-2 AT THE END OF THE FIRST QUARTER BUT BY THE TIME HALFTIME ROLLED AROUND CODY’S FULL COURT PRESS BECAME TO MUCH FOR THE POWELL OFFENSE TO HANDLE. CODY’S OFFENSE CAME ALIVE AS BOWER AND LAKE HARRISON DROPPED IN 11 POINTS AND THE FILLIES BUILT A 14 POINT LEAD GOING INTO HALFTIME WINNING 19-5.

THE THIRD QUARTER FEATURED MUCH OF THE SAME FROM THE FILLIES: FULL COURT PRESSURE AND STIFLING DEFENSE AND THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE WATCH FRO BOWER WAS OFFICIALLY ON. WITH TWO POINTS AND TWO REBOUNDS SECURED IN TH FOURTH QUARTER BRITTAN BOWER EARNED HER FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE OF THE SEASON AND THE FILLIES WALKED OUT OF POWELL WITH THEIR FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN.

LEADING THE WAY FOR CODY WAS BRITTAN BOWER WITH 10 POINTS AND 10 REBOUNDS WHILE TORRIE SCHUTZMAN AND LAKE HARRISON ADDED 10 POINTS A PIECE.

WITH THE WIN CODY IMPROVES TO 4-2 ON THE SEASON.

IN THE SECOND GAME OF THE DOUBLE HEADER SOME WINS CAN BE SWEETER THAN OTHERS. THAT WAS THE CASE FRIDAY NIGHT WHEN THE CODY BRONCS AND POWELL PANTHERS MET FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE POWELL’S 62-61 AT THE BUZZER IN DECEMBER. EVEN GOING BACK TO FOOTBALL SEASON, EVERY TIME THESE TWO TEAMS MEET IT’S A MEMORABLE GAME.

COY NOVAKOVICH RETURNED FROM AN INJURY, DROPPED IN 22 POINTS AND THE CODY BRONCS HELD ON FOR THEIR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON, DEFEATING THEIR PARK COUNTY RIVAL, THE POWELL PANTHERS 55-51 FRIDAY NIGHT.

BEFORE THE GAME NOVAKOVICH SAID THE BRONCS MUST BE THE MORE PHYSICAL TEAM AND GET OUT AND RUN, AND THAT THEY DID. THE BRONCS DROPPED IN 21 POINTS IN THE FIRST QUARTER, HELD POWELL TO JUST SIX POINTS IN THE SECOND QUARTER AND WENT INTO THE HALF WITH A 32-19 LEAD. CODY KEPT THEIR FOOT ON THE PEDAL IN THE THIRD AND LED AFTER THREE, 43-29.

THE FOURTH QUARTER IS WHERE THINGS GOT INTERESTING. POWELL OPENED UP THE FINAL FRAME OUTSCORING CODY 11-1 TO CUT CODY’S LEAD TO JUST FOUR, 44-40. BUT EVERY TIME POWELL WOULD GO ON A RUN THE BRONCS HAD AN ANSWER. WITH AROUND 2 MINUTES TO GO IN THE GAME THE PANTHERS TRAILED BY JUST TWO BUT THANKS TO STIFLING DEFENSE, CLUTCH SHOOTING FROM TRISTAN BLATT, AND KEY FREE THROWS FROM NOVAKOVICH CODY HELD ON FOR THEIR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON. AS THEY SAY, REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED COLD.

LEADING THE WAY FOR THE BRONCS WAS NOVAKOVICH WITH 22 POINTS. HE DROPPED IN FIVE MADE 3-POINTERS AND WAS 5-7 FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE. TRISTAN BLATT ADDED 10 POINTS WHILE HUNTER HAYS AND LUKE TALICH HAD 9 A-PIECE.

UP NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE IS A SATURDAY AFTERNOON DOUBLE HEADER AS THEY HOST WYOMING INDIAN.
