East Entrance Opens – Then Closes

Written by on May 5, 2017

After a long, hard winter, Cody residents and business owners have looked forward to the day that the East Entrance opens for the summer – however, this year, the event comes with a bit of a downer.

Although the East Entrance to Yellowstone opens today, due to avalanche danger over Sylvan Pass, the road will be closed this afternoon from 1pm to 6pm. That schedule will continue tomorrow, as well, according to the Yellowstone Public Affairs office.

Officials say that expected warm and sunny weather will create significant avalanche danger. They add that conditions will be closely monitored and additional closures may occur.

But that won’t stop the Cody Chamber from hosting their annual Park and Pancakes event this morning from 8 to 10:00 at the Visitor Center at the corner of Sheridan and 8th Street. Tina Hoebelheinrich, executive director for the Chamber, says that the event is free to the public – and not just for Chamber members.

Hoebelheinrich adds that their hours at the Visitor Center are expanded now, open seven days a week from 8am to 5pm, and will extend their hours further during Memorial Day weekend.
