Falling Rocks Temporarily Close Highways

Highways on either side of the Bighorn Basin experienced temporary closures yesterday after large rocks fell onto the roadway, blocking traffic.

Cody Beers with the Wyoming Department of Transportation says falling rock advisories are in effect on all mountain roads, including Ten Sleep Canyon, where a huge boulder blocked one lane of traffic yesterday afternoon; and the North Fork Highway west of Cody, where a rockslide took out a portion of the fence that had been built just last year as part of a rockfall mitigation project. Beers says the fence caught most of the slide, but some rocks ended up in the westbound driving lane.

Beers called WYDOT’s road maintenance crews, quote, “rock stars,” as they were out all weekend keeping the roads open.
