Fillies Split, Broncs Drop First Two Contests of the Season

Torrie Schutzman would drop in 20 points, on Saturday, highlighted by a buzzer beating three to end the third quarter and the Cody Fillies would bounce back to defeat Scottsbluff, Nebraska to earn a split at the Remax basketball tournament in Gillette, WY.

Cody opened up the game with a strong first quarter outscoring Scottsbluff 16-10 and kept up the momentum taking a 25-19 lead into the intermission. Kennedi Niemann provided the offense early scoring 11 of her 14 points in the first half.

The Lady Bearcats would open the third quarter on a run scoring the first five points of the quarter with help from a 1-3-1 zone that caused the Fillies some trouble. Cody would regroup as the end of the third quarter saw a 3-point contest break out that ended with a buzzer beater by Torrie Schutzman. Clutch free throws would be the theme for Filly basketball on Saturday as they were 16 of 20 from the charity stripe and Schutzman alone was seven of eight in the fourth quarter to help put the game away.

Following the weekend’s opening tournament the Fillies open the season 1-1.

As for the Cody Broncs, they would initially bounce back nicely from their Friday opening loss to but couldn’t overcome Scottsbluff, Nebraska Saturday in a 55-38 loss.

After a rough outing Friday, the Broncs opened up the first quarter with solid defense and fluid offense trailing by two at the end of quarrter number 1, 12-10. The Broncs would keep pace with a Scottsbluff team that lost in the semi-finals in Nebraska a year ago. The Bearcats would pull away at the end of the first half capitalizing on Broncs miscues to take a 30-21 lead into the break.

The third quarter opened up with neither team being able to find the bottom of the net but eventually the Bearcats outscored the Broncs by seven and pushed their lead to 16 by the end of the frame, effectively putting the game away. With the loss the Broncs open the season 0-2.

Leading the way for the Broncs was Caleb Pryor with 12 points, Cody Phillips added 11.

The Cody basketball teams will return to action Thursday evening for their home opener, Cody will play host Park Coutny Rival, Powell, inside the Sweitzer gymnasium. It’s a double header with all the action airing live on KODI. Tip-off scheduled for 5:30pm.
