Is Cody Dairy Queen Discontinuing A Fan-Favorite Menu Item?

Written by on June 3, 2023

Social media is abuzz over the recent announcement that Dairy Queen will be discontinuing one of its stalwart favorites.

DQ says they are getting rid of the Cherry-Dipped Cone.  News of the discontinuation surfaced on TikTok by a Dairy Queen location in Michigan a few weeks ago.

“Unfortunately, today I have some bad news, and I feel like a lot of people will be upset about this. I don’t know when or if it’s returning, but Dairy Queen is discontinuing their cherry cone dip,” the video narrator says. “It’s already sold out in our warehouse, so once we deplete the inventory in the store, we’ll be sold out until further notice.”

The internet melted with customer reactions.

But has the local DQ location in Cody stopped selling the fan-favorite ice cream treat?  “We haven’t been officially told anything [by corporate headquarters],” says Janet Williams-Davidson, owner of the Dairy Queen at 1701 8th Street.

“While it’s great to see our fans’ love for the Cherry Dipped Cone, we are always innovating our menus to showcase new and delicious flavors. Fans can keep an eye on our social channels for the latest and greatest on flavor offerings for the iconic DQ dipped cone,” so says a spokesperson from Dairy Queen Corporate.

But this isn’t the first time that Dairy Queen has discontinued their cone favorite.  In 2015, the restaurant chain announced that the cherry-topped sundae was to be discontinued. The cherry-topped sundae dates back to the ice cream corporation’s earliest roots, becoming a mainstay on menus for nearly 80 years.

Dairy Queen Historic Picture

The Dairy Queen story begins in 1938, two years before the restaurant opened, with the dawn of soft-serve ice cream. The inventors, J.F. McCullough and his son Alex convinced ice cream man Sherb Noble to sell it at his shop in Kankakee, Illinois. It was an immediate hit. Over the years, Dairy Queen has concocted and sold a number of flavors for their dipped soft-serve ice cream cones. In 2019, DQ launched the Dreamsicle dipped cone, and in 2022 and 2023 launched additional flavors including Fruity Blast, which is a cereal-flavored dip.  Their latest menu item is the churro cone which came out this year.

Dairy Queen has even tried their hand at a pumpkin-flavored dipped cone. As if there weren’t enough pumpkin-spice flavored items.
