Mac’s Five Favorite Christmas Carols

Every year we ‘Deck the Halls’ so we can spread ‘Joy to the World’ while listening to ‘the Herald Angles Sing’ before we go have a ‘Silent Night.’

Okay I apologize for that opening sentence above I just couldn’t resist myself from being punny to start off with. Christmas has so many wonderful things about the season but the music sits near atop of the list.

Whether it’s a fun, fantasy filled one like ‘Frosty the Snow Man,’ or one that encapsulates the season in its entirety like the previously mentioned ‘Joy to the World,’ carols are a necessity during this time of year.

Let’s take a look at five of the best yuletide ditty’s.

• Silent Night- This is a song that talks about baby Jesus in his manger describing him as “tender and mild.” Which I think out of context like I just put it, it seems as if the song is describing Mary’s son as a nice juicy chicken wing. I can assure you that is not the case as this song brings out emotion for all whether you’re a believer or not.
• Joy to the World- The song was originated in 1719, according to hymnary.org. Their has not been a song in North America that has been published more times than this song. I think that this songs objective is in the title of the song and it does just that.
• You’re a Mean One Mister Grinch- This is a song that I don’t think a lot of people would rank on here but I can’t not have it in my top five. This is a classic that I think invokes a lot of the fun about Christmas. It is one that all ages will love to sing along to and have fun with. It’s a change in pace from the previous two songs mentioned, but hey I am a guy with broad taste.
• It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year- The song tells the truth that is all I know. “Hearts will be glowing when loved ones are near,” really hits home for me literally and figuratively because that is a lot of what this season means to me. Being around the people that we most truly care about.
• White Christmas- This is one of those songs where most of the time I can only remember the opening line but its still enough for me to put it on the list. Growing up in Kansas and Tennessee, white Christmases weren’t always common, but it seems I may be in store for one this year in the cowboy state. So no more dreaming for me!
