Search and Rescue Continues Efforts up North Fork

Written by on March 2, 2017

Park County Search and Rescue continues to search an area of the North Fork for Powell Tribune reporter Gib Mathers, who was last seen on January 31st. His pickup truck was discovered on Friday, February 3rd by a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper in a pull out near the Wapiti Campground west of Cody.

Since that time, SAR personnel have logged nearly 800 man-hours searching for Mathers.

The most recent search involved a survey of the Shoshone River in the area of his disappearance. Despite the river still being frozen over in stretches, a member of the swift water rescue team floated the river for nearly 2 miles in a kayak. A second member of the team also walked the river’s edge for ½ mile with an underwater camera. Unfortunately, the search once again came up empty.

The search area continues to be covered in deep snow with intermittent thawing and refreezing. SAR will continue to monitor the search area hoping for conditions to improve.
