What’s In A Dream

Written by on April 8, 2021

Dream: /drēm/  a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep

Do you ever wake up in the morning and wonder what the heck that strange dream you had during the night was all about? It happens to me more than I can tell. From weird dreams of inventing things and being on Shark Tank to dreaming about work, personal life, to nightmares of being in danger and more. I always wonder if I dream these things because of something I watched, read, stress, or maybe I just have a very active mind. Hard to say.

Dr. Martin J. Aronson, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University, says the meanings of dreams vary tremendously from person to person. How ever the interpretations of certain dream symbols is universal and easy to translate to our everyday life.

Dreams mainly occur in the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep is when your brain activity is high and resembles the feeling of being awake. REM sleep is shown by continuous movements of the eyes during your sleeping hour. Dreams can occur during other various stages of sleep, but these dreams tend to be much less vivid or memorable. The length of how long one dream will last can vary; they may last for a few seconds, or approximately 20–30 minutes.

People are more likely to remember the dream if they are awakened during the REM phase. The average person has three to five dreams per night, and some of us can have up to seven. The sad thing is most dreams are immediately or quickly forgotten. The way the mind works is very interesting, especially when you see it on paper. This is what your brain waves look like as you sleep and dream away the hours.

Here are six of the most common themes and situations and how they could relate to you and your dreams.

Caves – Tunnels, doorways, bureau drawers or mossy caves. They represent a desire for affection of the need to get closer to a lady in your life.

Running – Being chased means you are running away from something that is too difficult or you are avoiding a confrontation. Fight or flight. You picked flight.

Aliens – Dreaming of creatures from outer space can be an indication that some outside force is playing a role in your life. Also that you are uncertain of your surroundings or something that is going on in your life.

Water – A calm stream of water stands for security, safety and comfort. Turbulent water on the other hand can mean there is a disruptive force in your current environment or that you feel overwhelmed. Soothing water= GOOD   Raging water = BAD

Falling – A drop generally means instability in your life but a free fall with no clear beginning or end represents a lack of feeling connected to your environment.

Nightmares – Contrary to what most people think ongoing nightmares are nothing to worry about. Scares you and then moves on.
