Warriors In Cody For Wyoming 3A Football Playoffs

The Worland Warriors and the Cody Broncs will meet each other for the second time this season in Cody.

The first meeting saw the number 3 ranked (at the time) Worland Warriors go down to the number 1 ranked Cody Broncs 67-7.

This is the 4th year in a row the Warriors have traveled Northwest in the Big Horn Basin to face Cody in the first round of the Wyoming 3A playoffs.

Cody has won the previous 3, the last two the Broncs would continue on to win the Wyoming 3A State Championship.

This series goes back 98 years to October 11th, 1924, a game Worland would win 18-0.

To compare that in time 7 days after the first meeting of the 2 schools Red Grange (Inaugural NFL Hall of Famer) would score 4 touchdowns for the University of Illinois.

That game was considered the most remarkable performance of Grange’s career and would spotlight American Football in the eyes of the Nation.

Worland and Cody have played 85 times in that 98-year span, 3 times the game has been canceled due to snow. 1928, 1938, and 1942.

The 2 schools tied once in 1958, 6-6.

The Warriors had early success against the Broncs from 1951 to 1962 winning 10 games, 1 tie, and 1 loss.

During that same era, the Warriors were in the Wyoming State Championship 7 times winning 6 straight from 1952-1959.

Cody began to put together winning streaks from 1983-1995 winning 13 of those matchups, and Worland would win in 1988. ( the only loss Worland had in 1989 was a 20-21 loss to Cody, Worland won the Wyoming 3A State Championship that season.)

The Broncs would also put together a current streak of 17 wins from 2005 – 9/9/2022 Worland beat Cody in 2015 10-7.

In the nearly 100 years of this rivalry, Cody leads with 54 wins to Worland’s 31.

Offensively the Broncs rank 2nd in Wyoming 3A Football running the football averaging 253.5 yards per game, a total of 2028 yards this season with 29 touchdowns and 4 fumbles.

Cody also has the number 2 ranked passing offense in Wyoming 3A football averaging 204.9 yards per game, 1639 yards through the air 26 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, the Broncs’ Quarterback efficiency is tops in Wyoming 3A football with a 186.4 rating.

The passing defense for the Broncs is ranked 8th allowing an average of 155.6 yards per game, 1245 yards this season, 4 passing touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

The Warriors are led offensively by Senior Quarterback Kade Weber who leads the team in rushing with 244 yards on 53 attempts and 5 touchdowns.

Weber has 1148 yards passing with 100 completions on 148 attempts with 12 touchdowns and only 1 interception. His QB Efficiency rating is 158.1%

Senior Rugar Mascaro has 165 yards rushing on 43 attempts, Brock Douzenis has 145 yards on 29 attempts and 2 touchdowns.

Douzenis leads the Warriors in receiving with 485 yards with 33 catches and 6 touchdowns, Court Gonsalez has 432 yards on 50 catches and 2 touchdowns, Trae Bennett with16 catches for 198 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Carter Clark with 10 catches and 2 touchdowns.

Jackson Schroeder leads the Broncs on defense with 40 tackles, 19 solos, 6 tackles for loss and a sack, 3 fumble recoveries, and a pass block.

Lucas Talich has 38.5 tackles, 14 solos, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception, 2 pass blocks, and 2 defensive touchdowns.

Grayson Beaudrie has 36.5 tackles, 19 solos, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks.

The Warriors leading tackler is Sophomore Linebacker Roman Parra with 73 tackles this season 45 solos, 4 tackles for loss, and 2 pass blocks.
