Cody, Wyo., November 20, 2025—The Shoshone National Forest will begin burning operations for slash piles in the coming weeks, pending all required approvals. This work will continue throughout the winter as weather conditions allow or until the work is complete. Pile burns are used to reduce overgrown vegetation and help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.
Planned areas for pile burns:
- Northfork corridor, Highway 14/16/20 (Park County)
- Sunlight and Crandell (Park County)
- Horse Creek Guard Station (Fremont County)
- Long Creek Area (Fremont County)
- Upper Little Warm Springs (Fremont County)
- Pine Creek Area (Fremont County)
- Loop Road Corridor (Fremont County)
- Dickinson Park (Fremont County)
These areas may be temporarily closed to the public for safety reasons. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.
Residents may experience smoke during and shortly after the burns. For more detailed information about air quality, go to AirNow.gov online or download the app. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.
We will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before a burn begins. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled.
Stay informed about the scheduled prescribed fires through the Shoshone National Forest Facebook page. Additionally, fire managers will notify the appropriate agencies and partners ahead of any ignitions.
