Summer Safety Tips

With the summer tourist season in full swing, the importance of following best practices while recreating in Park County is critical.

Sitting at over 5,000 feet above sea level, visitors to Park County may face a number of health risks when arriving from lower elevations.  Those risks include dehydration, altitude sickness, and bumps and bruises while recreating around town.

To prevent yourself from falling victim to outdoor activity related injuries during the summertime, Guardian Flight Program Director Nicci Urbigkit recommends drinking plenty of water to stave off dehydration, and allowing time to acclimate for any tourists still getting used to Park County’s altitude.

Urbigkit added that preparation is key when hitting the trails or camping in the area surrounding town.  She advised that individuals carry a basic first aid kit, warmth and shelter supplies, and a GPS device before recreating in the backcountry.

Additionally, to be prepared for the worst possible outcome, Guardian Flight and AirMedCare offer a $99 per year membership, which covers all out of pocket expenses in the event that you, or anyone in your household, should need air medical transport from one of their providers.  For additional details, visit https://www.guardianflight.com/membership.
