Written by on August 14, 2023

On Saturday, August 19 the Buffalo Bill Dam & Visitor Center and Buffalo Bill State Park will be hosting Great Dam Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s event will be held at the Visitor Center, six miles west of Cody on HWY 14/16/20.

Once a year, with cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation, the old dam road below the Visitors Center is open to the public to be able to walk through or bike on to take in the views.

During the event, there will be different interpretive learning stations located below the Visitors Center on the old road, and rides back to the visitor center will also be available.

Food from Fat Racks BBQ will be available to purchase in the Visitor Center parking lot.

The Bureau of Land Management also has activities planned for kids to participate in.

In 1910, the historic Buffalo Bill Dam was completed, with the project beginning in 1904. The work to develop the dam was dangerous, difficult and tedious.

Upon the dam’s completion, it was the tallest dam in the world and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The water storage supplies four irrigation districts that encompass over 93,000 acres of farmland.

People of all ages will find this event fun and fascinating. Volunteers and staff members will be on site to answer any questions or provide assistance to visitors.

This event is free to the public and open to people of all ages.
