Cody Basketball Drops Road Contests to Evanston, Green River

Written by on February 17, 2020

BOTH CODY BASKETBALL TEAMS WERE ON THE ROAD OVER THE WEEKEND TAKING ON EVANSTON AND GREEN RIVER AND BOTH TEAMS WOULD FALL IN EACH GAME PLAYED VS. THE TWO TEAMS. ON FRIDAY THE FILLIES FELL TO EVANSTON 44-32. ON SATURDAY THE FILLIES WERE MATCHED-UP AGAINST ONE OF THEIR TOUGHEST OPPONENTS ALL SEASON, GREEN RIVER AND LOST 67-35.

AGAINST EVANSTON SHOTS WOULD NOT FALL FOR THE FILLIES, WHILE ANYTIME THE LADY RED DEVILS NEEDED A BUCKET THEY WOULD KNOCK IT IN. EVANSTON KNOCKED DOWN FIVE 3-POINTERS IN THE CONTEST ALL AT CRUCIAL TIMES, TO EITHER EXTEND THE LEAD OR KEEP THE FILLIES FROM FINDING ANY MOMENTUM. EVANSTON ALSO PLAYED STIFLING DEFENSE HOLDING THE FILLIES TO JUST 14 SECOND HALF POINTS.

ON SATURDAY THE FILLIES WENT UP AGAINST A POWER HOUSE THAT IS THE GREEN RIVER LADY WOLVES, WHO ARE RANKED 4TH IN CLASS 4A AND MAY BE THE BEST ALL-AROUND TEAM THE FILLIES HAVE FACED ALL YEAR. GREEN RIVER IS DEEP, THEY CAN SCORE ANY WAY THEY WANT AND HAVE A PLAY-MAKER AT EVERY POSITION. IN THE GAME, GREEN RIVER HAD FOUR PLAYERS SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURES.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE FOR CODY, BRITTAN BOWER HAD ARGUABLY HER BEST GAME OF THE SEASON. SHE SCORED EIGHT POINTS IN THE CONTEST BUT SHOWED A COMMAND FOR THE OFFENSE. THE WAY SHE LOOKED FOR HER SHOT, SLASHED TO THE RIM AND DROVE THE LANE WAS THE BEST SHE’S PLAYED ALL YEAR. ADD THAT SKILL SET TO A PLAYER THAT IS ALREADY ONE OF THE BEST DEFENDERS ON THE TEAM AND BOWER COULD ADD A PUNCH FOR THE FILLIES THAT THEY NEED GOING INTO CONFERENCE PLAY.

WITH THE LOSSES THE FILLIES FALL TO 7-9 ON THE SEASON.

FOR THE CODY BRONCS, THEY LOST 55-31 AGAINST EVANSTON ON FRIDAY. IN THE SECOND GAME ON SATURDAY HUNTER HAYS’ HALF COURT HEAVE TO TIE IT UP AT THE END OF REGULATION MISSED LONG AND THE BRONCS FELL 69-66.

THE BRONCS GRABBED HOLD OF THE MOMENTUM AND TOOK THE LEAD EARLY 11-4 MID WAY THROUGH THE FIRST QUARTER BUT GREEN RIVER STORMED BACK AND WENT ON A 16-7 RUN TO END THE QUARTER AND LED AFTER ONE, 20-18. WHILE IT WAS A CLOSE GAME THROUGHOUT THE BRONCS NEVER LED AGAIN GOING TOE-FOR-TOE WITH THE WOLVES ALL AFTERNOON.

MIDWAY THROUGH THE 3RD QUARTER CODY FOUND THEMSELVES IN FOUL TROUBLE AS HAYS, COY NOVAKOVICH, TRISTAN BLATT AND DUNCAN RADAKOVICH ALL HAD TO SIT ON THE BENCH WITH FOUR FOULS. DURING THAT TIME CODY’S BENCH WAS ABLE TO KEEP IT CLOSE. LATE IN THE GAME CODY PHILLIPS KNOCKED IN A DEEP THREE WITH UNDER 5 SECONDS TO PLAY CUTTING IT TO WITHIN ONE POINT AND THE BRONCS HAD A CHANCE TO TIE IT AT THE END BUT HAYS HALF COURT HEAVE WAS JUST A LITTLE TO LONG AS THE BRONCS WALKED AWAY EMPTY HANDED.

WITH THE LOSS CODY FALLS TO 6-10 ON THE SEASON.

HAYS LED THE WAY WITH 21 POINTS WHILE COY NOVAKOVICH AND DUNCAN RADAKOVICH ADDED 13 APIECE.

A COUPLE OF BRIGHT SPOTS TO NOTE: DUNCAN RADAKOVICH ADDED FIVE REBOUNDS AND HAD ARGUABLY HIS BEST GAME OF THE SEASON. DISPLAYED A GOOD TOUCH AROUND THE RIM AND WAS ABLE TO FINISH. HE ALSO SHOWED GREAT POISE DOWN LOW. THE BENCH CAME IN AND PLAYED ADEQUATE DEFENSE AND WITH THE BRONCS HEADING BACK INTO QUADRANT PLAY ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. BIGGEST ISSUE THAT NEEDS FIXED: CAN’T ALLOW AN OPPOSING PLAYER TO BEAT YOU. ON FRIDAY EVANSTON’S DAWSON CROFTS DROPPED IN 25 POINTS AGAINST THE BRONCS, SATURDAY GREEN RIVER’S JACHOB FUSS DROPPED 28.

BOTH CODY BASKETBALL TEAMS RETURN TO QUADRANT PLAY NEXT WEEKEND TO CLOSE OUT THE SEASON. THE FILLIES LOOK FOR THEIR FIRST QUAD WIN WHILE THE BRONCS STILL HAVE A CHANCE AT THE NUMBER 1 SEED FOR THE REGIONAL PLAYOFFS. ON FRIDAY CODY HOSTS KELLY WALSH WHILE SATURDAY THEY TRAVEL TO ROCK SPRINGS. CODY THEN CLOSES OUT THE REGULAR SEASON SATURDAY FEBRUARY 29TH VS. RIVERTON.
