Cody Football Preview for Douglas

Written by on September 18, 2020

The Cody Bronc Football team is off to a hot start in 2020 scoring 40 plus points in each of their first two games. The Broncs offense has been electric and the defense is flying around. Week three of the young season will pit the Broncs against Buffalo for their final non-conference game of the season. Recently I caught up with Head Coach Matt McFadden and he’s looking for his team to perform more seamlessly.

“We need to be a little bit more consistent. I think this team’s just kind of feeling out how good they can be. What I want them to understand is you guys can be really good. We just need to believe in it, just need to show it for four quarters. Kind of had some spurts last game. Got a little undisciplined, had some penalties and some things that just weren’t good enough once we get to conference ball. Our effort is phenomenal. I’m really excited about our effort, I’m excited about coming together as a team.”

The season is still young and Coach McFadden and the Broncs will use this final non-conference game as one last tune-up for the Conference season.

“Ultimately these games, these first three games, this being the last of those is about us cleaning our stuff up. And really ironing out our starters and our rotations, what plays we like out of certain sets and things like that. You do still scheme, and you do that, you have to do that in football a little bit. Really our priority when we break it down, we spend a lot more time breaking ourselves down than we do the opponent.”

Buffalo will present a different look than what the Broncs defense has seen yet this year as they look to line up for the power run game. Coach McFadden on the challenges that presents.

Best running back that I’ve seen in awhile. This kid is good. Hatch kid is a very talented running back. Is fast, has size, kind of has all of it. Their offensive line, typical Buffalo kids, they’re not huge but they’re very aggressive. They’ll fight you. They’re really good. Lots of pulling, guards pulling, centers. They do a good job with their gap scheme stuff.

Coach McFadden goes on to talk about a couple of position groups he will be keying in on.

“I’d like to see our free safeties. Lot of work with them. They’re really talented individuals. Devyn Engdahl came away with a big pick last game. I’d really like to see those guys show up in the run. They’ve been working their reads and really been working hard this week. On offense, I think our exterior blocking, perimeter blocking, just improving that. We got a few holding calls and got a little bit lazy with our feet last week. Just to work on our perimeter blocking game.”

And this will be Cody’s first true road test of the season and it will be important to see how the Broncs respond.

“You’re always anxious to see how you travel. We got a taste of that going to Douglas. In this case it’s a game. It’s a business trip. They need to be loose as we head over and then as we get closer really lock-in at gametime. Stadium’s different, everything’s going to be different. We try to keep as much the same but it’s different when you’re on the road. We’ve had a big crowd the last few games and we’ve rode that momentum. It’ll be nice to see what we can do when we’re away from that and the crowds going against us.”
