Cody to be Reclassified back to 3A beginning 2024-25

Written by on May 2, 2023

Reclassification is coming to Wyoming High School Athletics.

Reported first by Wyatt Burichka at County 10, the Wyoming High School Activities Associations has passed a new reclassification motion for the second time which will now go into effect in the 2024-25 school year.

Cody is heading back to Class 3A across the board, for the most part.

Every two years, reclassification is looked at. Cody moved up to 4A in several sports during the 2018-2019 season.

In recent years, when one school moved up in classification, another school would have to move down. That is no longer the case.

The new rule that is in place for classification is a harder cut-off. Going forward, if a team passes a new threshold, they will join the new class without another school being affected by it. The association will still gather student population numbers every two years.

The cutoff numbers are below:

4A: 700+

3A: 210-699

2A: 110-209

1A: 109 and below

The current format has one year left and starting in the 2024-25 school year the new format will be in effect.

Cody is projected to have 626 students, by then, dropping them back to 3A.

This classification will affect all sports except football.

Some of the biggest changes coming include: Cody Basketball, Volleyball and outdoor Track and Field will all move down to 3A.

Some questions that do arise… Cody is one of few schools that participate in every sport offered by the WHSAA.

What happens to Alpine and Nordic Skiing as well as Softball and Tennis who technically compete as All Class? Do they stay the same, do they change?

Those questions are sure to be answered down the line.

Below, you can check out how the rest of the schools in Wyoming will be placed: (Note: The order of how teams are listed is based on the projected school population. Schools at the top have a higher student population, and school names at the bottom have a smaller student population.)
