Last week Wyoming-Football.com released a new addition to their website, looking at Wyoming’s top football coaches by victories. Only the top 100 coaches by total victories through the end of 2021 were shown.
I decided to go through the list and take a look at where area coaches landed.
We’ll start off with the obvious, Cody’s own Matt McFadden. Coach McFadden has been at the helm of Bronc Football since 2013. In that time he has compiled a record of 66-26. His 66 wins are tied for 58th all-time in Wyoming and tied 12th most among active coaches. He’s won four state titles and sports a .717 win percentage.
John E. Deti would coach at Meeteetse and Shoshoni for one year each and is third on the list with 205 total wins.
John R. Deti who coached at Cody in 1965 is 4th on the list with 188 career wins.
John McDougall who coached at Cody from 1974-98 is 8th on the list with 156 career wins.
Harold Bailey coached at Shoshoni his entire career and finished with 129 total wins, 17th all-time.
Ben Smith coached at Rocky Mountain from 1988-2002 and racked up 101 wins, 29th all-time.
Michael McGuire who coaches both Riverside and Big Horn is 41st on the list with 84 wins.
Andy Johnson, who coaches at Basin for 10 years is tied 43rd with 82 wins.
Cody’s own, Paul Sweitzer is 46th all-time with 81 victories.
Carl Selmer, of Worland, is 47th with with 80 wins.
Phil Juillard who coaches at several area schools (Burlington, Basin, Riverside and Greybull) is 48th with 78 wins.
Jim Stringer, of Powell, is 55th with 70 wins.
Wade Sanford, from Worland, is 66th all-time with 64 wins.
Phil Treick was at Thermopolis for five years and compiled 63 total wins in his career, tied 67th.
Steve Olsen, from Revirside (1990-03), has 62 wins, tied for 69th.
Doug Hazen, from Lovell, is tied for 69th with 62 wins as is Fran Gillette who coached at Powell for a few years.
Harold Hand, of Powell and Roy Strom, of Lovell both have 60 total wins, tied 75th.
Joe Bush of Thermopolis is tied for 78th with 59 wins.
Cody’s own Chris Williams, 2000-2012, has 59 total wins, tied 78th.
