Cubs go 3-1 on the Weekend
Written by Cole Havens on June 22, 2020
THE CODY CUBS HAD BACK TO BACK DOUBLE HEADERS THIS WEEKEND AFTER THE LONG REST WEEK AND WERE SUCCESSFUL WITH A RECORD OF 3-1 ON THE WEEKEND.
THE DOUBLE HEADER ON SATURDAY THE CUBS WERE MATCHED UP AGAINST THE DOUGLAS CATS. THE CATS WERE THE LAST TEAM THE CUBS HAD PLAYED SWEEPING THEM LAST MONDAY AT HOME
IT WAS A NAIL BITER IN GAME ONE IN DOUGLAS AS THE CUBS FACED A TWO RUN DEFICIT GOING INTO THE TOP OF THE 7TH INNING. CODY PHILLIPS AND JARED GRENZ WERE ABLE TO HIT A PAIR OF DOUBLES WITH SOME RUNNERS ALREADY ON ULTIMATELY SCORING 3 RUNS THAT INNING AND GAINING THE FIRST LEAD THEY HAD HAD SINCE THE 4TH.
DEVYN ENGDAHL REALLY SHINED IN THAT FIRST DOUBLE HEADER AGAINST DOUGLAS AND IT WAS NO DIFFERENT IN THIS 7TH INNING AS COACH GRENZ CHOSE HIM TO CLOSE OUT THE GAME FOR THE CUBS WHICH HE DID WITH EASE GOING 3 UP AND 3 DOWN IN THE LAST INNING HAVING THE LAST OUT BE A 3 PITCH STRIKEOUT. THE CUBS WOULD HOLD ON TO THEIR 1 SCORE LEAD AND WIN 9-8.
IN THE SECOND GAME AGAINST DOUGLAS, THE CUBS GOT DOWN EARLY AS DOMINIC PHILLIPS PITCHED THE SQUAD INTO A 5-0 DEFICIT EARLY. THE CATS HAD 11 HITS IN THAT GAME AND 3 HOME RUNS, 2 OF WHICH COMING IN THE FIRST INNING.
CODY PHILLIPS HOMERED IN THE 3RD TO MAKE THE DEFICIT 4 BUT IT WAS NOT ENOUGH AS THE BATS WERE JUST TOO HOT FOR THE CATS IN GAME 2 AS THE CUBS DROPPED THE GAME 13-7
ON SUNDAY THE CUBS HOSTED THE LAUREL DODGER FOR A TWO BILL AND THAT IS REALLY WHEN WE GOT SEE THE TEAM JUMP INTO A RHYTHM.
IN GAME 1, THEY STARTED CODY PHILLIPS PITCHING BUT THAT WAS SHORT LIVED AS HE GOT HIMSELF INTO TROUBLE EARLY ALLOWING 4 OF THE 5 BATTERS HE SAW COME TO THE PLATE WALK WITH THE OTHER GROUNDING OUT.
SO TRISTAN BLATT CAME IN THE GAME WITH THE 2 MEN ON THE BASES AND 2 OUTS. BLATT WENT ON TO STRUCK OUT THAT PITCHER AND RETIRE THE INNING JUST 1-0.
HIS SUCCESSFUL DAY WOULD CARRY ON IN THAT GAME AS HE WENT 3 STRAIGHT INNINGS OF 3 UP AND 3 DOWN STRIKING OUT 5 PEOPLE IN HIS TOTAL OF 4 INNINGS PITCHED.
JARED GRENZ LATER CAME IN WITH THE BASES LOADED AND 2 OUTS IN THE TOP OF THE 5TH AND JUST NEEDED ONE STRIKE TO RETIRE THE INNING WHICH HE DID WITH BEAUTIFUL PITCH THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE ZONE.
AFTER A SLIGHT RAIN DELAY, PLAY WOULD RESUME AND THEY WOULD 10 RUN THE DODGERS IN GAME 1 IN 5 INNINGS WINNING 11-1
THEY KEPT THAT MOMENTUM FLOURISHING IN GAME 2 AGAINST THE DODGERS AS THEY WERE HITTING THE BALL OUT OF THE PARK.
JARED GRENZ STARTED OFF THE SECOND GAME WITH AN RBI HOME RUN INTO DEEP CENTER FIELD. GRENZ WENT 4-5 IN GAME 2 WITH A WALK.
TRISTAN BLATT DECIDED TO JOIN THE HOME RUN PARTY BLASTING A GRAND SLAM HOME IN THE SECOND INNING. AFTER BLATT WENT JUST 2-8 ON SATURDAY IN DOUGLAS HE WAS ABLE TO GO 3-8 ON SUNDAY BUT WITH 2 WALKS TO GO ALONG WITH IT.
A SURPRISE PERFORMANCE ON THE MOUND FROM LOGAN MCLEOD WAS ALSO A HUGE HELPER IN FINALIZING THE GAME 2 WIN BECAUSE HE WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT THROUGH 6 INNINGS. ETHAN JOHNSTON CAME INTO CLOSE OUT THE 7TH GOING 3 UP 3 DOWN AFTER TAKING OVER FOR MCLEOD WITH THE BASES LOADED.
THE CUBS WOULD WIN GAME 2 AGAINST THE DODGERS HANDILY 14-5 AS THEY CAPTURED 12 HITS AND JUST 3 ERRORS ON THE DAY.
COACH GRENZ HAD THIS TO SAY ABOUT THE PLAY FROM HIS TEAM ON SUNDAY
“IT WAS GREAT, I THOUGHT OUR KIDS PLAYED REALLY WELL. I WAS A LITTLE NERVOUS COMING IN THAT THEY WERE GONNA BE A LITTLE FLAT AFTER THE LONG BUS RIDE LAST NIGHT AND THE GAMES IN DOUGLAS. BUT I THOUGHT THEY CAME OUT, FOUND A SECOND GEAR, THEY FOUND SOME ENERGY THERE AND IT WAS GOOD TO SEE THEM GO OUT THERE AND BATTLE AND WORK HARD AT THE GAME.”
THE CUBS WILL TRAVEL TO PLAY THE CASPER CRUSH TODAY FOR A DOUBLE HEADER AT 3 AND 5. YOU CAN CATCH ME ON KODI FOR ALL THE PLAY BY PLAY ACTION.
