A Cody man has been heralded for his act of heroism in the face of danger.
Wyoming Department of Transportation technician Stuart Eckhardt was the recipient of the G. Clyde Larson Memorial Award for his actions in aiding the construction worker who was fatally injured when a rock fell on him during a project on the North Fork Highway.
Last September, Triptych Construction employee Shane Powell was struck by falling debris during the rock removal project just west of the tunnels outside Cody. According to WYDOT Director Bill Panos, Eckhart rushed without hesitation into a dangerous area to administer first aid, staying with Powell until an ambulance arrived on the scene.
Although Powell eventually died from the injury, Eckhardt, who is a Cody native, served as a Lance Corporal in the Marines, and has been employed by the Wyoming Department of Transportation for the last 28 years, received the prestigious award which recognizes acts of heroism by Wyoming Department of Transportation employees either on or off the job.
