This has become a regular part of Church’s shows in Detroit, as he continues to show his respect for Seger. Church shared a story with the sold-out crowd about how Seger came to his aid in 2006 when Church was replaced on a tour for upstaging the headliner, Rascal Flatts. After being cut from the tour, Seger reached out to Church and offered him the opportunity of a lifetime.
“The next phone call we got was Bob Seger,” Church recalled, “and it went something to the effect of, ‘You can’t open for them, but you can open for me,’ so that’s what we did….” Church expressed his gratitude, stating that he wouldn’t be where he is today without Seger’s support. Since then, Church has included Seger’s songs in his Detroit shows as a way of repaying the favor.
Church also mentioned that he had previously attended Seger’s final performance at Pine Knob on June 21, 2019. He recalled the experience, describing how Seger delivered an incredible performance. “Sitting right there, right by the soundboard, I watched Bob Seger burn this son of a b**** down,” Church said. “So tonight…it just feels like the right thing to do… We’re gonna try something we haven’t tried…”. Church and his 12-member band then performed a 12-minute medley, starting with “Turn the Page” and going on to play “Like a Rock,” “Roll Me Away,” “Mainstreet,” “Get Out of Denver,” “You’ll Accompany Me,” “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man,” and “Night Moves.”
