Fillies OT Win Highlights Cody Basketball’s Weekend Trip to Gillette

OVER THE WEEKEND THE CODY BASKETBALL TEAMS COMPETED AT THE GILLETTE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TO START THEIR SEASONS.

FOR THE CODY FILLIES, THEY WOULD GO 1-2 OVER THE THREE DAYS, DEFEATING CAMPBELL COUNTY IN OVERTIME 59-56. IN THE OT VICTORY THE FILLIES FOUND THEMSELVES DOWN BY AS MUCH AS 16 POINTS LATE IN THE FIRST HALF BUT A 7-0 RUN TO END THE SECOND QUARTER SENT THE FILLIES INTO THE LOCKER ROOM DOWN 35-24. THE FILLIES OPENED UP THE THIRD QUARTER SCORING THE FIRST FOUR POINTS AND TRAILED 43-38 ENTERING THE FINAL FRAME. THE FILLIES WOULD TAKE THE LEAD IN THE FOURTH QUARTER FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE EARLY IN THE GAME AND WITH 5 SECONDS TO GO CAMPBELL COUNTY’S SHAELA MILLIRON KNOCKED IN TWO FREE THROWS TO SEND THE GAME INTO OVERTIME.

IN THE EXTRA FRAME THE LADY CAMELS GOT ON THE BOARD FIRST BUT THE THANKS TO A BIG THREE FROM TORRIE SCHUTZMAN AND CLUTCH FREE THROW SHOOTING FROM KENNEDI NIEMANN AND BRITTAN BOWER THE FILLIES HUNG ON FOR THE OT VICTORY.

LEADING THE WAY FOR THE FILLIES IN THAT CONTEST WAS TORRIE SCHUTZMAN WITH 17 POINTS. BRITTAN BOWER ADDED 14 INCLUDING TWO CLUTCH FREE THROWS TO SEAL THE WIN.

MEANWHILE, FOR THE CODY BRONCS, THEY WOULD GO 0-3 OVER THE WEEKEND SUFFERING LOSSES TO THUNDER BASIN, SCOTTSBLUFF NEBRASKA AND CAMPBELL COUNTY HIGH SCHOOLS. THE BRONCS SHOWED STEADY IMPROVEMENT OVER THE THREE DAY TOURNAMENT. IN THEIR FINAL GAME AGAINST THE CAMELS, THE BRONCS PLAYED ONE OF THEIR BEST HALVES ALL TOURNAMENT, FINDING THEMSELVES DOWN BY 3 TO THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RUNNER-UPS A YEAR AGO BEFORE FALLING IN THE CONTEST 71-58.

LEADING THE WAY FOR THE BRONCS OVER THE 3-DAY STRETCH WAS HUNTER HAYS WITH 13 POINTS PER GAME. COY NOVAKOVICH ADDED 10.3 POINTS A GAME WHILE TRISTAN BLATT AND LUKE TALICH PITCHED IN WITH 8 POINTS A CONTEST.

UP NEXT FOR THE CODY BASKETBALL TEAMS IS A MATCH-UP WITH PARK COUNTY RIVAL THE POWELL PANTHERS. THOSE CONTEST TAKE PLACE FRIDAY DECEMBER 20TH WITH THE GIRLS AT 5:30PM FOLLOWED BY THE BOYS AT 7PM.
