Flag Retirement Ceremony Friday

Written by on June 12, 2019

Flag Day is this Friday, and members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary in Cody will be conducting a flag retirement ceremony that day.

When flags become worn out or soiled, rather than throw them in the trash, the proper way to dispose of an American Flag is to burn it. That’s according to Auxiliary member Sandy Pedersen, who clarifies that it’s important to do that with respect and honor.

The Flag Retirement ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, and Pedersen says they believe the program will be informative and inspirational. Community members are invited to bring their worn-out flags to be properly “retired” during the ceremony.

Similar events will be taking place around the Bighorn Basin on Flag Day. In the town of Basin, they have a flag disposal box at their American Legion Post in which they collect worn out flags throughout the year.
