Flooding Closes Campgrounds

Written by on June 12, 2017

Highway 26 is open west of Riverton to Dubois, as receding water has led to the end of the closure.
However, flooding continues to threaten this part of the state. The Shoshone National Forest reports that several campgrounds across the ranger districts are experiencing flooding, so due to safety concerns, partial closures are in effect at Wapiti, Big Game, and Wood River Campgrounds.
Several roads have been closed temporarily due to washouts, landslides, or extreme high water. The situation changes rapidly, so before traveling, visitors are encouraged to check with the Wapiti Ranger District office for the latest information on road and campground status and closures.
Recreationists are urged to use extreme caution while recreating near streams and rivers. Many river banks have been severely undercut and eroded by swiftly moving water. These banks could give way with little to no warning, causing harm to those standing on them.
