Former Teacher Sentenced for Shoplifting

Written by on April 27, 2018

A former Cody special education teacher who was convicted of having sex with an underage student in Douglas appeared in Park County Circuit Court earlier this month for trying to steal over $150 in merchandise from the Cody Wal-Mart.
The Powell Tribune reports 37-year-old Katie Marcus pleaded guilty earlier this month to misdemeanor shoplifting, which occurred while she was on probation for the 2013 incident. In 2016, Marcus was sentenced to supervised probation for up to five years for third-degree sexual molestation of a minor from the incident in Douglas. The conviction could be wiped from her record upon successful completion of probation.
But following the incident at Walmart, Converse County prosecutors did not seek to revoke Marcus’ probation. However, she was upgraded to “extremely intensive supervised probation” in September, according to her defense attorney, Lindsey Krause of Cody.
According to court documents, Marcus attempted to steal about $157 worth of items from the Cody Walmart in July, which included scissors, tape, pens, ribbon and groceries, among other items. She pleaded guilty to misdemeanor shoplifting at an April 4 hearing, citing an alcohol addiction that she says played a large role in her decisions.
