History Made: Filly Basketball 2nd at State
Written by Cole Havens on March 15, 2021
The Cody Fillies basketball team made history over the weekend, taking part in the Class 4A State Basketball tournament. While the Fillies would fall in the title game against Cheyenne East, 52-37, the Fillies made history by just stepping onto the hardwood for the title game. The 2021 Cody Fillies became the first girls basketball team in program history to play in a state title game. Their second place finish is the best in program history.
Prior to 2021, the last time the Fillies made a state semi-final game was 1996 and prior to this year, the best place a Cody Filly basketball team placed at state was 3rd place in 1994
It was an amazing run for the Fillies this season, finishing the year 18-6 on the season, 4-2 in league play. They entered the State Tournament as the No. 3 seed out of the west. They would knock off No. 2 out of the East, Thunder Basin, in the first round at state before throttling Sheridan in the second round, 54-33, to advance to the championship game.

In the semi-final game vs. Sheridan, every player on the roster would play and nine Fillies would score a point as they cruised past the Lady Broncs, who would finish State in 3rd place, 54-33.
The Fillies used stifling defense all night against Sheridan. Cody would lead 15-9 after the first quarter and over quarters two and three, the Fillies outscored the Lady Broncs 27-9.
Kennedi Niemann led the way for Cody against Sheridan, dropping in 19 points. She knocked down three 3-pointers.
In the Championship game the Fillies would find themselves in a hole early, trailing 12-3 after one quarter and trailed at the intermission 26-13. The Lady Thunderbirds of East would take a 17 point lead into the final frame. The Fillies, after struggling on offense for the first 24 minutes, would find their rhythm in the final frame but it was too little too late as East was able to hang on for the win.
Torrie Schutzman led the way for the Fillies in the title game, scoring 13 points. She was 4-8 from 3-point range.
Over the course of the three games Kennedi Niemann led the way for the Fillies with 38 total points, Torrie Schutzman had 35 and Molly Hays scored 29.
