Hypothermia Caused Death of Basin Man

Written by on December 15, 2017

Police have released the name and cause of death of the man whose body was discovered in the yard of a Basin residence Monday afternoon.
59 year old Kevin Payne, also known as Chase Payne, died of hypothermia exposure on Monday, December 11th. Basin Police and Big Horn County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the call Monday afternoon when a homeowner on the 600 block of West A Street in Basin reported that they had found the body of a man lying in their yard next to the garage.
As there was no obvious cause of death, an autopsy was conducted, which showed that hypothermia was to blame for Payne’s accidental death, although other medical issues were likely a contributing cause. Basin Police Chief Chris Kampbell says that no foul play is suspected in this case.
Kampbell noted that Payne had just moved to Basin five days before his death, and that authorities are having difficulty locating any next of kin. If anyone has information about Payne’s family, please contact the Basin Police Department at 307-568-2341.
