Mount Washburn Trails Closed

Written by on June 29, 2018

The popular Mount Washburn Trails from Dunraven Pass and Chittenden Road in Yellowstone National Park will close this summer for the remainder of the season.
Located north of Canyon Junction, the trails and trailhead parking lot closures will go into effect around the beginning of July, and according to Park officials, are necessary for public safety during projects that will help improve services for visitors.
One of those projects is to improve park telecommunications by building a three-sided antenna mounting structure at the historic Mount Washburn Fire Lookout. Contractors will also be repairing rock walls and surfaces around the lookout, reducing the number of antennas attached to its exterior, and will complete concrete preservation work in and outside of the structure. Additionally, windows in the lookout, damaged in a storm this winter, will be replaced.
The park’s trail crew will also rebuild rock walls along the Dunraven Pass switchbacks using heavy equipment and rehabilitate other portions of the trail. Explosive work may occur.
Visitors are asked to please plan accordingly- you can find updated trail status on the park website and at visitor centers.
