Nick Mason: Pink Floyd Reunion Unlikely Without a “Miracle”

Written by on June 21, 2023

Nick Mason drummer of Pink Floyd believes that a reunion is unlikely, because of the issues between David Gilmour and Roger Waters.  In a recent interview, Mason mentioned that it would take someone like Nelson Mandela to bring them together.

“I think it’s highly unlikely, but I would’ve said that before Live 8 — 10 years ago or 12 years ago, whatever it was,” Mason said. “The one thing I could think would be possible would be if there was some… if by getting back together we could influence saving the planet, world peace, or whatever. Hopefully, we’d step up. But I don’t think otherwise. It would take a Nelson Mandela or someone like that to lead on it.”

While Pink Floyd’s Live 8 performance in 2005 brought the band’s surviving members together briefly, Gilmour has since made it clear that he would not return to perform on any future occasions. Since then, Gilmour and Waters have remained at odds, with Mason acting as a middleman. Despite recent issues and controversies, Mason has expressed his admiration for Waters and his ‘ re-recording of The Dark Side of the Moon.

Tensions escalated higher earlier this year when Gilmour criticized Waters, calling him a “misogynistic, antisemitic Putin apologist.” That criticism of Waters proceeded, with an investigation by German police into Waters’ attire during his performances in Berlin, where Waters took to the stage resembling that of a Nazi SS soldier.  Waters has continually denied these allegations.

The ongoing conflicts and disagreements between the two musicians have made a full reunion challenging.
