The college is offering a Wilderness First Responder course during the 2nd half of its Fall 2020 semester. The course, in Northwest College’s own words, “is designed to provide outdoor leaders, instructors, guides, rangers, and wilderness and foreign travelers with the knowledge needed to deal with emergencies in remote settings.” The curriculum itself is setup do deal with a myriad of potential injuries and scenarios: to CPR considerations (when not to start and when to stop), wilderness wound and burn management, clearing patients of spine and head trauma, athletic injuries, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, etc.
But there is an added focus on emergencies in remote situations, and participants will receive up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies. The emphasis of the entire course is prevention and decision-making, which are often the keys to saving lives when it matters most. Upon successful completion of the course, participants can receive certifications as a Wilderness First Responder, in Adult CPR and Airway Management.
Northwest College’s First Responder Course will be Wednesday Nights from October 14th thru December 9th, 6:00-9:00 pm, at the Northwest College Cody Center.
