Now You Know: Puppy in Italy Born With Green Fur

Written by on October 26, 2020

Now here’s something you don’t see every day.

A farmer in Italy’s dog recently had a new litter of pups.  This would normally be unremarkable, but the reason this litter is making headlines is because one of the pups is not like the others.  The pup in question was born with green fur.

How? You might ask.

This puppy likely came into contact with a certain pigmentation called biliverdin in the womb of its mother, and this pigmentation causes pale dogs to have a green tint to their fur.  It is also the same pigmentation that causes green bruises in humans.

This phenomenon has been observed in other dogs but is usually very rare.

Over time, the green tint of this dog’s fur will fade.  It is still a very cool occurrence nonetheless.

Speaking of cool, with Halloween around the corner, check out the recent Now You Know story on The West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta.
