On This Day: Blondie ‘Parallel Lines’ Hits Number One

Written by on February 17, 2023

On this day back on Feb 17, 1979, Blondie reached a pinnacle when their album ‘Parallel Lines’ reached No. 1 in the UK and started a four-week run at the top of the charts.  This album featured classic singles such as  ‘Heart Of Glass’, ‘One Way or Another’ and ‘Sunday Girl.’

‘Parallel Lines’ is the third studio album by Blondie, released in September 1978.  When the album reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom in February 1979 it proved to be the band’s commercial success.  ‘Parallel Lines’  would finally break through in the United States in April 1979, where it reached No. 6.

Eventually, the album would end up selling over 20 million copies worldwide.  In the UK alone ‘Parallel Lines’ spent 106 weeks in the charts throughout the late ’70s. Unfortunately though with such commercial success, it set the standard so high that the band would forever struggle to replicate, a career-defining album, and eventually would lead to their breakup in 1982.
