Public Comments Encouraged for Hathaway Scholarship Changes
Written by Andrew-Rossi on July 29, 2020
The Hathaway Scholarship Program is eyeing some changes.
One of the vaunted educational offerings in our state, the Hathaway Need-Based Scholarship is designed to provide an incentive for Wyoming students to prepare for and pursue post-secondary education within our state. The program consists of four separate merit scholarships, each with specific eligibility requirements, and a need-based scholarship for eligible students that supplements the merit awards.
During the last Legislative session, a number of revisions were recommended to the definitions and parameters of the scholarship under Chapter 38. The proposed changes would limit the amount of need-based scholarships available for graduate students, and allow super scoring as a merit-based consideration. Super scoring is the average of highest individual scores on an applicant’s college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT.
Before these changes are voted upon and/or implemented there’s a public comment period open for anyone wishing to comment on the proposed changes and how those might alter opportunities for future applicants. The public comment period for Chapter 38 rules will close at 11:59 p.m. on September 15, 2020. Comments can be submitted online or mailed to the Wyoming Department of Education.
