An organization based in southern Big Horn County provides a service to the Big Horn Basin for both horses and humans.
Rainhorse Equine Assisted Services is a 501c3 nonprofit charity organization whose stated mission is “To create a safe forum where horses guide people towards physical, psychological and emotional healing,” adding “we will enlist the aid of horses who have experienced hardship and rehabilitated by Rainhorse.”
Rainhorse has been serving the Big Born Basin since 2008 and became a nonprofit in 2015. Rainhorse Executive Director Maria Eastman says they have programs based on equine assisted counseling and education. An example of one of their services is shown by a December 3, 2021 post on their Facebook page showing therapy pony Gandalf visiting a resident of the Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin, WY. Every week Gandalf, Gabby and Maria lead a program called “Horse Tales; #Ponies & #Poetry for #Dementia Care. https://www.facebook.com/
Rainhorse Equine Assisted Services has an Open House Saturday, December 11 from 9 am to noon at the Worland Community Center, and their Ponies and Pottery event is also Saturday, from 4 to 6 pm at the Hyattville Community Center. Rainhorse Equine Assisted Services says they partner their equine staff with mental health professionals, allowing participants to regain physical, mental, and emotional health. In turn, the healing from this process allows people to give back to creatures great and small. You can see on their rainhorse.org web site and their Facebook page ways you can help support their causes, from sponsoring horses to participating in the silent auction this week that culminates at the Open House at the Worland Community Center.
