Police in Powell are on alert after a potential threat to the school district was discovered on a social media post.
Jay Curtis, Superintendent for Park County School District 1, told parents that it was determined that the social media posts were a hoax, and that there is no credible threat to the high school. However, the Powell Tribune reports that school officials requested a heightened law enforcement presence, just as a precaution.
According to the article, Powell Police Chief Roy Eckerdt said the post in question was found on a Powell High School student’s Snapchat account. The post featured pictures of several handguns, with the caption, “can’t wait for school.” However, the student claimed that the image had been altered, which was backed up by the department’s investigation.
Eckerdt says that whoever created the post could potentially face criminal charges.
