May 2023 is officially here & with it is the kickoff to the summer movie season!! If the last few weeks is any indication, we are in for a real treat this year…
In late April, the Super Mario Bros. Movie had a $146 million domestic opening. It has since surpassed Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania to become the highest-grossing movie released in 2023. It also became the best-performing video game adaptation ever, topping Warcraft (2016) and Detective Pikachu (2019).
Last weekend, the U.S. box office saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 earn $118.4 million domestically & $170.9 million internationally, for a combined total of $289.3 million in it’s opening weekend – Guardians 3 is now the 32nd consecutive Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film to debut No. 1 at the domestic box office.
Upcoming movie releases in the US include:
- Book Club: The Next Chapter (Jane Fonda) – May 12th
- Fast X (Vin Diesel)- May 19th
- The Little Mermaid (Halle Bailey) – May 26th
- Kandahar (Gerard Butler) – May 26th
- Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse (Shameik Moore)- June 2nd
- Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts (Pete Davidson) – June 9th
Although Fast X is currently getting alot of traction, on the promotion circuit, since it’s rumored to be the last film in the Fast & the Furious franchise, The Little Mermaid is already looking to be a high-earning film over Memorial Day weekend.
The live-action Disney film is looking to bring in $110M over the 4-day weekend & if it succeeds, it’ll be among the top eight openings for the holiday weekend, last year Paramount pic Top Gun: Maverick brought in a record $160.5M in 2022.
…And that is just the start of summer movies!
