Beginning at 6 A.M. on Wednesday, July 19, the West Thumb Geyser Basin, located in the southern part of Yellowstone National Park, will close temporarily for road improvements.
The areas that this will affect include West Thumb Geyser Basin, its’ restrooms, boardwalks, and parking lot, the Duck Lake Trail, and the Yellowstone Lake Overlook Trail.
The road closure is only expected to last 36 hours, with the roadways being reopened by 6 P.M. on Thursday, July 20.
During the closure, Yellowstone Park Officials want visitors to anticipate delays up to 30 minutes. They also want to notify visitors to drive slowly through construction zones and to be cautious and alert to workers, heavy equipment entering and exiting roadways, wildlife and any other hazards they may come across.
To stay informed about the road conditions in Yellowstone National Park, visit Park Roads or call (307) 344-2117. Visitors can also text “82190” to 888-777 to receive road alerts about the park directly to their phone. An automatic confirmation will be sent as a text reply, along with instructions.
This is not the first temporary road closure Yellowstone National Park has experienced this season. Last month, the park had two temporary road closures, one of which occurred after an unexpected mud slide happened just outside of the East Entrance. However, the other temporary closure in June was planned in accordance with the park’s road improvement project and affected the Northeast Entrance.
