Threat Addressed at Powell Middle School

Written by on March 28, 2018

Despite creating stricter safety measures, the Powell Schools this week faced an internal threat at the Middle School.
On Saturday, law enforcement received information of a potential threat to school safety at the Powell Middle School. Police Chief Roy Eckert says that over the course of the weekend the School Resource Officer and school administrators contacted all the students involved, and while they deemed the circumstances safe, this case was very serious, and is still under investigation.
Eckert pointed out that due to the fact that there are juveniles involved, there will not be very many details released to the public, although he says there will be criminal charges filed in the case.
Eckert added that this case brought home the reality of the current climate, with the number of school shootings and other violent acts increasing throughout the nation.

Eckert says that the school district has amped up its external security this year, requiring every person who enters the building to go through a strict sequence of security measures to make sure no one gets in who might be a danger.
The Powell School Board has recently initiated a community conversation around a policy that could allow for armed staff members, just as the Cody School District is in the process of passing.
