Written by on April 27, 2023

The University of Phoenix, a private, for-profit university based in Phoenix, Arizona, is partnering with Northwest College in Powell to help students better navigate and attain their degree from community college courses to higher degrees.

The new, academic agreement, called a 3+1 Transfer Pathway Program will allow students who are enrolled at NWC to save money on their education.  By spending three years to complete their general course requirements at the community college, students will be able to complete their bachelor’s degree at the University of Phoenix in just under a year.

Northwest College President, Lisa Watson, is excited about the new partnership.  “It is a pleasure for Northwest College to establish an agreement with the University of Phoenix.  Serving our students through articulation agreements provides many pathways to graduation and for future success,” says Watson according to a press release.  Students can transfer up to 87 credits towards a bachelor’s degree under the new agreement and if all 87 credits are transferred, students would only have to complete 33 credits to graduate.

The University of Phoenix was founded in 1976 and offers certificates and degrees at the certificate, associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.  The institution of higher learning is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and has an open enrollment policy for many undergraduate programs.  It launched its online program in 1989.

Leo Gonclaves, vice president of Workforce Solutions for University of Phoenix says, “University of Phoenix is proud to work with Northwest College to expand affordable and career-relevant degree pathways. Programs aligned with in-demand industries benefit students, job seekers and employers by supporting a skilled talent pipeline.  We look forward to continuing our work with Northwest, and with community colleges across the country, as we offer timely solutions for busy, working adults.”

University of Phoenix, for many years, has established community-college education agreements across the United States.  The agreements have allowed community college students transferring in University of Phoenix can save $144 per course as long as it’s a three credits.  And the student can lock in to a fixed tuition rate for the completion of their degree program through the University of Phoenix.

Northwest College employees who enter the program for a bachelor’s or master’s degree can take five classes with the sixth being free.  For the doctoral program, all resource fees are waived.

“Our agreement with Northwest College allows Wyoming students an additional opportunity to save time and money while pursuing a college degree,” so says John Woods, PhD, who is the provost and chief academic officer. He goes on to clarify, “Our Transfer Pathway Program is an excellent option for adult learners ready to complete their education and enter the workforce. We are pleased to work with Northwest College to implement these quality academic programs and we look forward to serving even more students together.”
