Opinion: UW Virtual Graduation – What a Joke
Written by dariandudrick on February 26, 2021
The University of Wyoming’s decision to conduct its spring 2021 commencement ceremony virtually is a cop-out.
The virtual ceremony will air Saturday, May 15, at 10 a.m. on the official UW YouTube channel.
Administrators say they want to avoid a COVID-19 super-spreader event, but that didn’t stop them from allowing 5,000 fans for UW football games and 2,000 for basketball.
If they’re concerned about people – from other states and countries – coming to Laramie for graduation, they can simply close the ceremony to spectators and, at the very least, allow graduates to walk. Family and friends can watch virtually.
Or what about an outside ceremony?
Graduation is the most important event at UW.
Or is it?
