Watch for Falling Rock Near Tunnels

Motorists traveling west out of Cody are warned of a dangerous situation developing in the canyon.
Cody Beers with the Wyoming Department of Transportation says that the massive rock that fell on the east side of the tunnels two weeks ago was just the first indicator of an unstable rock face. He says that WYDOT geologists examined the area yesterday, and warns that there is a large section of rock that is ready to fall.
Beers notes that after the rock that fell two weeks ago was examined, they found that it had actually been bolted to the canyon wall years ago, and when the bolts failed, the rock fell.

Beers says that WYDOT is quickly putting together a plan to make the area safe, but it will involve a significant number of traffic delays, including at least one full day in which the highway will be shut down.

Until WYDOT can begin the stabilization work, Beers urges drivers to keep a close eye on the canyon wall, and watch out for falling rock.
