WaterSMART Grant Helps Lovell Irrigation District

Written by on July 10, 2019

The Lovell Irrigation District has been selected for a grant to help local communities bolster their water supply.

The Bureau of Reclamation announced that the Lovell Irrigation District will receive a $300,000 grant from the WaterSMART Program. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt says the program helps to conserve limited water resources, as existing water and hydropower resources are being strained due to aging infrastructure and population growth.

The Lovell Irrigation District will use the grant money to convert 8,750 feet of the Moncur Lateral into buried PVC pipeline, to address seepage and evaporation losses. The project is expected to result in an annual savings of over 1,500 acre-feet of water.

The Lovell project is one of forty-five projects that will be funded through the WaterSmart program.
