Way Back Whens-Day: The Eagles Release Hotel California

Written by on February 22, 2023

On this day in music, February 22, 1977, The Eagles released “Hotel California,” . The top song from their fifth studio album ‘Hotel California’.  The song is considered to be The Eagle’s most popular track.

The meaning behind the lyrics of ‘Hotel California’ has been debated by critics and fans alike since the release.  But according to the band, it is their “interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles.”

Interestingly enough Don Felder did not expect ‘Hotel California’ to be a hit.  At the time most radio hits were around the three-minute mark,  and so Don Felder believed there was no chance that a six-and-a-half minute song with a long intro and an even longer guitar solo could ever be a single.  luckily for us he was wrong the classic hit entered the Billboard Hot 100, and the single became their fourth to reach No.1 on that chart. “Hotel California” later earned them a Grammy for Record of the Year.
