WYDOT Repaving Highway Near Yellowstone in Summer 2022

Written by on January 10, 2022

W.Y.D.O.T. prepares for its next Park County project – rehabilitating a section of highway running thru Shoshone National Forest to Yellowstone National Park.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation is planning a Pavement Rehabilitation Project for Summer 2022. As a result, nearly 11 miles of the North Fork Highway will be repaved – along with other roadside improvements – for the first time in two decades.

Overall, the project will consist of a two-inch hot plant mix overlay and chip seal on a section of U.S. 14/16/20, much like the work W.Y.D.O.T. did on WY Highway 20 last summer. There will also be some shoulder flattening, guardrail repair, pipe work, and rototilling of the existing surfacing.

Work will be located between the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park and the Fishhawk Trailhead from May 1 to August 31, 2022.

The Fishhawk Trailhead is in Shoshone National Forest, between Camp Buffalo Bill and the Absaroka Mountain Lodge. There are 10.7 miles of highway in the future work zone.

The original reconstruction project of U.S. 14/16/20 was completed in October 1997. W.Y.D.O.T. hoped to get 20 years of life from the original pavement. And they got nearly 25 years.

W.Y.D.O.T. moved the project up in its schedule due to available funding and deterioration of the existing pavement.

Tourists and Park County locals can expect up to 20-minute delays from the beginning of May to the end of August.

Like the W.Y.D.O.T. project on Sheridan Avenue, any contractor must abide by specific parameters for the roadwork. No pavement rehabilitation work can start until May 1, and all work (except seeding) must be completed by Aug. 31, 2022.

Furthermore, W.Y.D.O.T. requires unrestricted traffic and no work at several points during the summer.

  • Memorial Day weekend (Saturday, May 28 to Monday, May 30)
  • Independence Day weekend (Thursday, June 30 to Tuesday, July 5)
  • Labor Day weekend (Saturday, Sept. 3 to Monday, Sept. 5)

W.Y.D.O.T. is not allowing any work or delays over Independence Day weekend.

This project is in W.Y.D.O.T.’s February 2022 Bid Letting. Details about the bidding process and the winning contractor will be shared as they become available.
