You may have money coming to you.
Although it sounds too good to be true, Wyoming State Treasurer Mark Gordon says that there is about 60 million dollars being held by the state in unclaimed funds. Paychecks, life insurance payouts, utility deposits, checking and savings accounts – he says people lose touch of money that is owed to them if they lose touch with the businesses who have it.
Gordon and his staff are working to get money back to Wyoming residents during October, which he says is Unclaimed Property Month. So he is traveling around the state spreading the word.
Gordon says the program began 24 years ago when Wyoming passed the unclaimed property law. Last year, they collected a total of 8 million, which was more than their office has ever collected. Over the years the pot has gradually grown, and Gordon says the state currently safeguards a pot of 60 million dollars.
To see if the state is holding money for you, you can go to the website statetreasurer.wyo.gov. If you find your name or families names, you can call their office at 777-5590 to initiate a claim.
