37th Annual Powwow This Weekend

The 37th annual Powwow is this Saturday and Sunday at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and it promises plenty of culture and pageantry.
This is the longest-running public program that the Center offers, generally falling the weekend of Father’s Day. The event begins with the Grand Entry at noon on Saturday, June 16th, when the dancers all march into the Powwow Gardens south of the Museum. The grounds will open at 9:30 a.m., with Native American vendor booths and food service, followed by non-stop competition into the evening.
Marguerite House with the Public Information office at the Center of the West says that the organizers of the event vet all of the entries so that visitors are gifted with a very authentic native experience.
Among the exhibits at the Powwow is a Learning Teepee, which will allow visitors to ask and have questions answered regarding the dances, the costumes, and other aspects of the native culture.
The competition itself will showcase categories such as the men’s fancy and traditional dances, the women’s jingle and grass dances, team dancing and the tiny tots – and all dancers are competing for a total of $30,000 in prizes.
Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Center of the West Admissions desks, or at the gate on Saturday and Sunday.
