For the last fifteen years, skiers and snowboarders on the east side of the Big Horn Basin have had to travel many miles to spend a day on the slopes. But this holiday season, their local ski hill will open to visitors on December 28th.
According to an article in the Greybull Standard, the president of the nonprofit Antelope Butte Foundation confirmed the opening date on Monday afternoon. Jeff Grant added that from December 28th through January 6th, Antelope Butte Recreation Area will be open for nine straight days. After the holidays, skiers can run the hill on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
While the article points out that the lodge won’t be ready to open just yet, nor will the big ski lift, the smaller Park Lift and the new magic carpet will be running on the 28th. An old garage has been converted to a makeshift lodge for this season, while the 11,400 square foot lodge undergoes renovations. Grant noted that a fundraising campaign is underway to raise the one million dollars that it will take to renovate the lodge.
Antelope Butte offers 225 acres of skiing, with 23 marked trails and runs. Grant added that the goal is for Antelope Butte to be a year-round recreation destination, and plans are in the works to be able to offer scenic chair lift rides, mountain biking, festivals and camps during the summer months.
