The 2017 Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale has opened with the recognition and celebration of three works of art in the 2017 Show.
The Spirit of the Buffalo Bill Show and Sale, with a monetary award of $20,000, was awarded to artist Walter Matia, who sculpted a painting of a bison in bronze. Watercolor artist Dean Mitchell won the 2D award of $10,000, with his geographic landscape. The 3D award of $10,000 went to Oreland Joe, Sr., a native American artist who sculpted a bust made from alabaster. Oreland is the first Native American to win one of the top prizes at the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale.
Art Show Director Kathy Thompson says the applicants for the awards are limited to 106, so the caliber of artist and the work submitted is stronger than ever.
The Jurors who determined the winners were Editor of Western Art Collector, Joshua Rose, local art collectors and philanthropists Larry and Susan Patrick, and Ken Schuster, the Director of the Brinton Museum in Big Horn, Wyoming.
The Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale will culminate with the live art auction on September 22nd at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
