Avalanche Danger High Near Cooke City

Written by on March 1, 2019

Avalanche warnings have been issued for the Cooke City area.

The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center is continuing a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the Southern Gallatin and Southern Madison Ranges, the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone, the Centennial Range, and the mountains around Cooke City.

Officials say that heavy snowfall and strong winds are creating very dangerous avalanche conditions, and natural and human triggered avalanches are likely. The avalanche danger is rated HIGH on all slopes, and avalanche terrain and avalanche runout zones should be avoided.

Steady snowfall is adding more weight every day and slopes are avalanching, according to the Center, which means the likelihood of very large avalanches breaking near the ground is increasing. Experts are cautioning that any slope steeper than 30 degrees should be avoided.
