Beat the Brain Fog!

Written by on February 15, 2019

How many of us are going through life in a fog? You can’t focus for more than 15 minutes at a time; you easily lose your train of thought, when you used to be so sharp! How does this happen? I’m Wendy Corr, and in today’s Wellness Tip, I’ll point out some ways in which you can reverse the brain fog and perform to your potential every day!

We do a lot of things to damage our brains – too much sugar, too much junk food, not enough sleep. Too much stress and lack of exercise can also impact your mental function, along with the obvious – alcohol and drugs, whether they are legal prescription drugs or otherwise.

As a society, we have chosen to turn to substances to cope with life – sugar, caffeine and alcohol allows us to self-medicate, managing our moods and energy through external means rather than making simple lifestyle changes that could completely turn around your health and your outlook.

What steps can we take to recapture our mental acuity and embrace life to its fullest?

First, you can start to connect your behaviors with your feelings. Recognize that what you eat, how much you sleep, how much you exercise, and how much time you make to connect with family and friends absolutely affects how you feel!

Start making smarter nutrition decisions – cut out the processed foods, sugar and refined carbs, which are poisoning your brain and your body, and replace them with nutritious, whole foods that fuel your body instead of providing a quick fix for sugar cravings or other junk food addictions. Eat plenty of healthy fats, like coconut oil, avocados or raw, unsalted nuts and seeds. Protein is important, too – but not too much! You only need about 20-30 grams per meal. And just a few key supplements, like Vitamin D3, magnesium, probiotics and B vitamins, will help your brain function at its best.

When you start treating your body right, including feeding it the nutrients it needs, getting plenty of rest, light, air, water, exercise, community and love, your brain will respond by loving you back.
