Big Horn Armory Denied Appeal

Written by on April 4, 2017

The Park County Commissioners today will formally deny the appeal of a business’s practice of test firing guns at their property north of Cody.

On December 9, the County presented Big Horn Armory with a notice of violation, after complaints were brought by neighbors on Road 2AB regarding the noise level coming from the business.

Although zoning regulations do not prohibit shooting in the county by private citizens, Park County Planner Linda Gillett says that when the company filed for its special use permit in 2010, the permit specifically stated that there would be no testing of firearms at that location, and no additional noise.

The company, owned by Greg Buchel, appealed the notice of violation in December. Gillett said that at the Commission’s last meeting, they voted to deny the appeal, and today will sign a resolution that orders the company to cease discharge of firearms immediately.

Gillett says the company now has two options – they could appeal the decision in district court, or they could apply to the County Commission for an amendment to their Special Use Permit. Gillett said that it is her understanding that the company does intend to apply for an amendment, and she is planning to schedule a public hearing in May.
