Bighorn Basin on Alert for More Rain and “Nuisance Flooding”

Written by on June 14, 2023

In June 2023, Wyoming’s weather is somewhat predictable – making it even more of an enigma. Any residents frustrated with the pattern of sunny mornings and thunderous afternoons won’t catch a break this week.

The National Weather Service Office in Riverton is anticipating more rain going into the weekend. A Flood Watch is already in effect from noon on Thursday, June 15, to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 16.

Western and Central Wyoming should anticipate showers and thunderstorms bringing moderate to heavy rain over the next two days, especially those on the east side of the Continental Divide. The rain should lessen – but not stop – by Saturday.

Anyone living in a flood-prone area should be cautious.”Nuisance flooding” is a concern with any thunderstorm and are entirely possible with the impending weather system.

“Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain.”

The N.W.S. Office also anticipates “gusty outflow winds up to 40 mph.”

Daytime temperatures will stay in the mid-sixties.
